Fees

The fees

The fees cover services performed such as :

  • Consultation
  • Written opinion
  • Drafting of procedural documents (summonses, petitions, submissions, appeals, letters….)
  • Legal assistance and representation
  • Negotiation/mediation
  • Drafting of contracts

In accordance with our ethical rules, the method of calculating fees and charges is presented at the first appointment.

Different calculation methods can be considered depending on the nature of the case, with fees being charged on an hourly basis or on a flat rate basis. The final statement of costs and fees depends on the particularities of the case, such as :

  • its degree of urgency,
  • the complexity of the issue at hand,
  • the importance of the case,
  • the nature of the duties to be performed,
  • the chances of recovery of the amounts claimed,
  • the other side’s argument.

The client can ensure that costs and fees are kept to a minimum, in particular by encouraging negotiation, preparing a complete and clear file, and giving preference to communication by e-mail.

Costs (typing, opening of files, copies, faxes….) are also fixed, either as a flat rate, or on the basis of a percentage of the fee, or on the basis of a fee schedule which will be submitted to you at the first appointment.

Since 1 January 2014, all lawyers are subject to VAT. The fees as described above are therefore increased by 21% which you can deduct if you are also a taxable person.

In order to promote access to justice for all, the firm also provides free legal aid. Access to the free services of a lawyer is subject to strict conditions (see: www.aidejuridiquebruxelles.be). The conditions for granting legal aid are also discussed with the client during the first appointment.
